Small Nourishments

Have you ever noticed this?

Some days, you get in the shower, and it's an item to get through as quickly as possible.

Other days, you get in, and the warm water hits you and you feel like you could stand there forever. It's soothing and feels amazing. The warm water pounding on your back, the steam, the solitude.

It's these tiny moments that we must recognize and capitalize on to nourish ourselves in spirit and body.

Though it may feel small, the simple act of allowing yourself to enjoy that time can return volumes in terms of your self-nourishment.

Tips:

When that feeling hits you, allow yourself the extra 5 or 10 maybe even 15 minutes in the shower. If you're tight on time, I'm sure there is someplace you can make it up, skip the coffee shop run or telephone time.

Keep a couple of great products in or near the shower so you can make the most of those moments. I have a great salt scrub that I don't use every day and even a pack of body mud if I really want to treat myself.

Embrace the experience. Just allow yourself the space to enjoy it without judgement or criticism.

My hope for you in the coming week, is that if that moment hits you, you enjoy it.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

  1. I have small kids, so I never get the chance to have a few extra minutes in the shower. It's get in and get out as quickly as possible.....

  2. I take extra long showers in the winter. I get so cold, and a nice hot shower is a great way to warm up.

  4. This is a great suggestion. I love to take a hot shower and turn the shower head to the massage setting. It is a great way to release the tension in the back of my shoulders.

  6. Ha ha, I love this post. If I didn't have kids I would absolutely take five minutes in the shower! As it is, I try and get in without company of small cold hands on my bottom, wash my hair as fast as humanly possible, scrub myself clean as if my life depends on it, then leap out trying to avoid breaking a leg ;)

  7. Shannon, you brought up an important point in your blog. We spend so much time focusing on the BIG things in life we forget the joy that the small ones bring, such as an emotionally nourishing shower. I love my showers and often get my best ideas for my books in them.

  9. Sometimes I will stay in for a couple minutes extra, but I work really hard to conserve water. Staying in any longer would make me feel so guilty I wouldn't enjoy it.

  10. I never try to get through the shower as quickly as possible. I take care of my boys all day and I usually take a shower when my husband gets home from work so it's time to myself!
